An internship cover letter is three short paragraphs and about 250 words. You do not need a day of work experience to write a good one. You need one specific reason you want this internship, two pieces of proof that you can do the work, and a polite close. Students rarely fail for lack of experience. They fail because they write as if they had none.

You have more than you think. Below is where to find it, plus two finished letters to work from.

What to put where the experience would go

Employers hiring interns know you are a student. They want proof that you finish things, learn fast and know a little about the company. Four sources cover that.

Coursework projects. Name the project, not the course. "I built a regression model in R that predicted bike-share demand within 12 percent" is evidence. "I took Statistics 201" is a transcript line.

Clubs and student groups. Treasurer of a 40-member society is budget work. Running the robotics club's social account is content planning and analytics. Say what you did and put a number on it.

Part-time jobs. Retail, food service, tutoring or lifeguarding prove you are reliable. One sentence is plenty.

One specific thing about the company. A product you have used, a post on their blog, or a talk one of their people gave at your school. This sentence shows the letter was written for them. MIT's career office makes the same point: tailor every letter to the one company you are sending it to.

Purdue's writing lab adds a test for any skill you claim. In its notes on what to include, it warns that naming a skill proves nothing, because employers have read those words many times. Describe what you did instead. "Strong communication skills" is a label. "Presented our capstone to three faculty members and two sponsors" is proof.

The three-paragraph structure and the word budget

Paragraph Job Words
1. Why this internship Name the role, where you saw it, one specific thing about the company 50 to 70
2. Why you Two pieces of proof: a project and a job or club, each with a result 110 to 140
3. Close What you would like to happen next, when you are free, thanks 40 to 60
Total 200 to 270

MIT keeps a cover letter to one page at most, in 10 to 12 point type. A 250-word letter fills about half a page, which is the right look for a student. Check the draft in a word counter before you send it.

Example 1: marketing intern at a software company

The names and companies in both examples are made up. The posting: a summer marketing intern at a 400-person software company that sells scheduling tools to clinics. The intern will help with email campaigns, social posts and reporting. The applicant is a second-year communications major with no marketing job on her resume.

Dear Ms. Alvarez,

I'm applying for the Summer Marketing Internship at Northline Health posted on Handshake. I found Northline through your customer story about the Denver dental group that cut no-shows by a third. It was the first time I'd seen software marketing lead with the customer's numbers instead of the product's features, and I'd like to learn how you do that.

Two things from my second year fit this role. For my Digital Media Strategy course, I ran a six-week Instagram campaign for the campus food pantry. I planned 24 posts, tested two caption styles and reported each week in a shared dashboard. Followers grew from 310 to 780, and the two events we promoted brought the pantry's highest donations of the year. The caption test taught me to change one thing at a time and let the numbers decide. I also work 12 hours a week at the front desk of the university health center, where I send the appointment reminder emails and answer the replies. I know what a clinic's inbox looks like from the inside.

I'm available full time from June 2 to August 22, and I can share the campaign report and dashboard on request. I'm also happy to complete a short writing task if that helps. Thank you for reading, and I'd welcome the chance to talk about the role.

Sincerely, Priya Raman

We counted it: 229 words in all. The three paragraphs run 59, 117 and 47 words, so each one sits inside the budget above. The front desk job is the strongest line. It ties a part-time job most students would leave out to the company's own customers.

Example 2: STEM lab internship, shorter

The posting: a ten-week undergraduate research internship in a materials science lab. The applicant is a first-year physics student. Research letters run shorter, and the reader is usually the lead researcher, so name the work.

Dear Dr. Okafor,

I'm applying for the summer research internship in your thin-film group. I read your 2025 paper on sputtered zinc oxide coatings for my Introduction to Materials seminar and presented it to the class, so I know the questions the work raises and I'd like to help answer some of them.

In my first year I completed the two-semester physics lab sequence, where I built and calibrated a photodiode circuit and wrote the analysis in Python, and I earned an A in both semesters. I tutor high school students in math eight hours a week, which has taught me to explain a method clearly and to notice when I don't fully understand it myself.

I'm available for all ten weeks and can start June 9. Thank you for considering my application.

Sincerely, Daniel Mensah

This one is 136 words, greeting and sign-off included. A lab reader wants to know you have read something, can handle equipment and code, and will not need watching every hour.

Five mistakes to avoid

Repeating the resume in sentences. MIT says the letter should add detail to a few key experiences, not restate the resume as paragraphs. If a sentence would still be true after the reader looks at your resume, cut it.

Opening with an apology. "Although I do not have professional experience" is a common first line in student letters, and it tells the reader what to look for. Open with the company instead.

A letter that fits any company. If you could change the company name and send it again, so could every other applicant. The specific-thing sentence is the fix.

The wrong name or company. Read the greeting and company name aloud before you send. If you cannot find a name, MIT suggests "Dear Hiring Manager."

Listing skills as adjectives. "I am a motivated, detail-oriented, hardworking team player" tells the reader nothing. Replace each adjective with the thing you did that earns it.

Also check the resume you send with it. Run it through the ATS resume checker against the posting first.

Using our cover letter generator for an internship

Here is what our cover letter generator does, taken from the instructions it runs on:

  • It needs a job title, a company and at least 30 characters of highlights. The job description is optional, but without it the tool guesses what the role needs, so paste the posting.
  • It writes 250 to 350 words in three or four short paragraphs: an opening with one reason for interest, a middle that matches your highlights to the job, and a close that asks for the next step.
  • It is told never to add employers, degrees or numbers you did not give it. It also avoids stock lines such as "I am writing to apply," "team player" and "passionate."
  • You pick one of four tones: professional, enthusiastic, confident or conversational.

Two things follow. The tool cannot know your specific thing about the company unless you type it into the highlights. And its 250 to 350 words sit above our 200 to 270 budget, so expect to trim a sentence or two.

For Priya, the highlights box would hold four short lines: the pantry campaign (24 posts, 310 to 780 followers), the front desk job, her June 2 to August 22 dates and the Denver customer story. Every figure in her letter has to be in that box first.

Adapting it for the next application in ten minutes

Once you have one good letter, every later one is an edit.

  • Minutes 1 to 3: underline the two or three things the new posting asks for most.
  • Minutes 4 to 6: read one page on the company's site and write a new specific-thing sentence.
  • Minutes 7 to 9: swap the proof in paragraph two if another project fits better.
  • Minute 10: change the name, company, dates and role title, then read it aloud.

FAQ

How long should a cover letter for an internship be?

About 250 words in three paragraphs, and never more than one page. A half-page letter with two concrete examples reads better than a full page of padding. Research and lab letters can be shorter, around 150 words.

How do I write a cover letter for an internship with no experience?

Swap jobs for evidence: a course project with a result, a club role with a number, a part-time job that shows you are reliable, and one sentence that proves you know what the company does. Never open by saying you lack experience. The reader knows you are a student and is hiring interns anyway.

Should I include my GPA in an internship cover letter?

Only if it is strong and the posting asks for it, or the field cares, as many finance, engineering and research programs do. Otherwise leave it on the resume. A grade in the most relevant course does more in a letter than an overall number.
