About

I teach chemistry the way it was discovered: lab first, notes second. Students make a prediction, run the test, and only then get the rule. I plan every unit backward from the state standards, check understanding every week, and change the next lesson when the numbers say I should.

Featured case study

A lab-first unit on reaction rates

Ten lessons, five labs, one shared rubric across three teachers.

Students used to memorize the factors that change a reaction rate and forget them by the test. I rebuilt the unit so each factor is a lab students design themselves, with a short written prediction before and a one-paragraph claim after. Two colleagues taught it the next year.

Recommendations

“Mr. Reed runs the most organized lab in the building. Students who were afraid of chemistry ask to stay after class.”
